Talent Quests
Students are given the opportunity to perform in our year-long talent quest. Students sing, dance, act or play an instrument in either the K-2 or 3-6 assemblies. The ‘Talent Quest’ assemblies are held approximately once a month. Talent Quests are performed in the place of a class item.
The finals are usually held in week 8, term 4 in a combined assembly. The K-2 winner and 3-6 winner then perform again at our Presentation Day assembly.
K-2 Assembly: Fridays @ 11:30am in the hall
3-6 Assembly: Fridays @ 2:20pm in the hall
Buddy System
Kindergarten students are given a Year 6 ‘buddy’ on their first day of school. Buddies look after the kindergarten students for the first few weeks of school. Year 6 buddies come over the Kindy classrooms each recess and lunch and look after the new students in the playground. They help teach the new kindergartens the school rules and encourage them to play with their new Kindy friends.
Back in the classroom, Year 6 buddies are invited to come and join in with the kindergarten lessons. They read to the students, help them with their writing and join in with art lessons. Each year students make Easter Hats at school. The Year 6 buddies help the kindergartens make their hats for the parade.
Peer Support
In Terms 1 or 2 each year Beresford Road runs a Peer Support program for all students K-6. Students are placed in groups of approx. 12 children. Year 6 students receive special training before leading the groups.
The Peer Support program helps create links between students of different grades and provides a support network for all students.

Reading Recovery
Students in Year 1 who are experiencing difficulties reading and writing may be selected to take part in the Reading Recovery Program. Students on the program are withdrawn from class for 30 minutes a day to work 1-on-1 with our trained Reading Recovery teacher. Students stay on the program for approximately 12 – 20 weeks.
At the beginning of the year, the ‘most in need’ students from year 1 students (approx. 20% of the grade) are tested to see whether they are eligible to join the program. Between 6 and 10 students will receive the benefits of the reading recovery program each year.
Reading Recovery students are monitored and tested until the end of year 3 to ensure they are maintaining their levels in reading and writing.
ESL (English as a Second Language)
Students who come from a background where English is not their first language are given extra support. These students are withdrawn from class a few times a week for intensive English language work by our specialised ESL teacher.
Our ESL teacher supports our students 2 days a week.
Support Teacher Learning Assistance (STLA)
We have been allocated funding for a specialized support teacher to work with our students 2 days a week. Students are withdrawn in small groups to work on areas they find most challenging in both English and Mathematics.
Effective Schoolwide Reading
Beresford Road Public School is joining with four other schools in our district to implement a new, systematic approach to reading instruction. Other schools in the pilot program are:
Hilltop Road Public School (Merrylands)
Pendle Hill Public School
Wentworthville Public School
Yates Avenue Public School (Dundas)
Over 1000 students and approximately 50 teachers will be involved. This will be first time this program has been fully implemented in Australian schools.
